The Edit button for system variables is grayed out for nonadministrators. This means that I have to change the user account to administrator type, or simply work in an administrator account not advisable except for administration activities which seems to me to be far riskier than allowing nonadministrators to edit their paths.
Surely there must be a way to avoid this? I accessed the Control Panel's User Accounts item as a standard user. I am given the option of changing the account type for this account. When I chose to change it to administrator, the window closed and there were no error messages. I was not asked to provide the authentication for an administrator account.
However, the account type remained standard. I will try again by logging out and logging in, but the process implemented by the GUI leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully, it will improved with time. When I changed the user account to administrator type, I was able to access the Path variable.
It contained the changes that I had made to another administrator account. So the variable appears to be common.
